Bio
My name is Mia Jaatinen and I am a freelance dance artist based in Helsinki Finland. Currently I work as a dance-performer, choreographer and as a dance teacher in different working environments and productions. I hold a Master´s degree in Dance Performance from University of Arts Helsinki (2015). I also hold a Bachelor's degree in Dance Pedagogy from Oulu University of Applied Sciences (2013). I have worked with several choreographers and performed in Finland as well as internationally.
I am one of the co-founders of /\/\ /\/\ /\/\ collective. As a collective we work collectively through the exploration of the dancer/performer position and expertise. I am a member of Jarkko Mandelin´s professional contemporary dance group Kinetic Orchestra where I have worked as a dancer and a teacher since 2017. I have also co-founded a society called Dance and Movement ( Tanssi ja Liike Ry ). A group called This Good Company is one of the society's projects and it is a collective of professional dance artists, that organizes various artistic outputs, events and teaching activities.
I have taught dance to different target groups from professionals to amateurs in Finland and abroad. I combine my varied dance and movement background with the somatic practices of contemporary dance, acrobatics, partnering and improvisation in my pedagogical work. I'm passionate about teaching dance and movement and the feeling of community inspires my work.
As a dance artist I am interested in playing and experiment with different practices of dance and performance such as improvisational movement tasks, set materials, partnering and chanching ways of being. I combine bodily imagination, sensitivity, power and virtuosic movement through the exploration of the dance-performer's position and expertise. Currently I'm researching physicality and different phenomenas through bodily realms. I like to play with worlds of infinite impulses in our minds and bodies as well as different logics of organizing movement.
As a performer and mover I'm versatile, determined and curious. I like to challenge myself and I would say I'm a quite ambitious person, also in my work. I constantly educate and develop myself and reach towards things that interest me.
In addition, I'm extremely interested in the female imagery, point of views and the way the female can be portrayed. In my work I look to deconstruct and play with female stereotypes and stigmas.
I also have a passion for dance films. I have been involved as a screenwriter, choreographer and as a dancer in successful dance short films such as Second Illusion, Go!, Blind and Peripheral Vision. These films have been touring in different film festivals internationally.
As a counterbalance to hectic freelancing, I seek and find inspiration through other art forms and especially from nature's beauty. I enjoy being in the woods and near the water with my loved ones, including animal friends. The four seasons in Finland offers so much beauty to the sight and love for the soul. These milieus feed my imagination and provide a place to think, sense and be.
